Musicians' letters are an invaluable source of information about all aspects of musical life, but have often been less well documented than other music research materials.
The Music Libraries Trust is funding a scoping study to identify and document collections of musicians' letters in the UK and Ireland. The one-year project focuses on performers' and composers' letters from 1900 to the present, but also hopes to identify earlier collections of importance. Letters may be held in institutional archives, libraries and museums, including broadcasting, publishing and funding institutions and societies, as well as music festivals, performance venues and individual private collections.
The project is interested in both public and privately held collections of letters, with the aim of outlining the size and range of materials extant, their condition and access arrangements to them. Data collected will be included in Cecilia (the online guide to music collections in libraries, archives and museums in the UK and Ireland) and the final report of the scoping study, to be published in 2011, will outline any further work which might be undertaken on this project.
If you have or know of private collection which would be relevant to the project, or would like further information, please contact the project management team at musiciansletters@googlemail.com.
