The RMA is excited to announce the formation of a new Student Committee, following the election that took place at the 2012 Research Students’ Conference in Hull. In addition to the newly-elected student representative Amanda Hsieh (University of Oxford), we are pleased to welcome Simon Evans-White (Oxford Brookes), Zoltan Paulinyi (University of Évora, Portugal), Marilou Polymeropoulou (University of Oxford) and William Summers (Kingston University) as committee members.
The inaugural meeting of the committee took place on Saturday 7 January in the Middleton Hall, Hull. At the top of the agenda was the question of how to increase the profile of the RMA among students. In response to this, the committee’s first project will be to increase the RMA’s online presence. Marilou is currently drafting a proposal for an RMA students’ blog. It is envisaged that this blog will form the centre of an online hub that students can also connect with via Facebook and Twitter. In addition to regular posts on anything from musicology to career guidance, the blog will also provide a discussion forum, where students can express their own opinions. This should help increase dialogue between the wider student body and the RMA.
The Student Committee will act as a voice for students, representing their concerns and needs to the RMA. Committee members will stand for two years, during which time they will liaise between students and the RMA and take an active role in shaping and promoting the student-related activities of this organisation. The committee will meet once a year at the RMA Research Students’ Conference and will be comprised of up to seven members, including the two student representatives, committee members and a trustee. The out-going student representative, currently Kate Guthrie (King’s College, London), will chair the committee.
