Call for Papers: Constructing the Moving Image: Identity and the Soundtrack, 9 Feb 2019, Huddersfield

Call for Papers

This study day focuses on representation and identity in relation to moving image soundtracks. From character portrayal on screen to those involved in producing, playing, and watching these texts, identity is a crucial element of how we engage with and consume multimedia. We encourage interdisciplinary discussion of all kinds of moving image media, including film, television, video games, and online platforms, and particularly welcome contributions from postgraduates and early career researchers.This study day is supported by the Royal Musical Association, and the Centre for Music, Culture and Identity at the University of Huddersfield. Registration will be free for all postgraduate students and RMA members, and catering will be provided.

All proposals and contributions will be considered, but the following topics might be of particular interest:

  • Song and voice as markers of identity
  • Categories of identity and/or their representation
  • Queering the soundtrack
  • Sonic representations of dis/ability and mental health
  • Methodologies for and approaches to analysing identity in moving image media
  • The identity politics of creation and dissemination in musical multimedia
  • Sounding intersectionality

Proposals should include:

  • Your name

  • Title of your presentation
  • 250 word (maximum) abstract

Please email us at Eleanor.Smith@hud.ac.uk if you require any unusual set up or equipment. All rooms are equipped with standard AV projection equipment and a piano. Please note papers need to be a maximum of 20 minutes to allow time for feedback.
