Link: Music after Fascism: Cultural Rebuilding in post-war Europe
12 Jul 08
This Study Day will explore the interface between music and politics/society in Europe during the years following the Second World War. The particular focus will be on the after-effects of Fascism and totalitarianism on compositional style, and the difficult process of recovering – or rejecting – the modernism project. The aesthetic incongruities in ‘new’ music (symbolised most pointedly by the debates surrounding high-serialism and its discontents) will form the artistic centre around which discussions of larger political and social issues (such as the impact of socialism and the cold war) will revolve.
