This one-day conference aims to explore the theory and context of Wagner operas in performance. There will be papers on aspects of singing, conducting and staging, presented by acknowledged experts in the field. The morning and afternoon sessions will each be concluded with a round table bringing together a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all aspects of Wagner performance.
In the evening (8pm) the ensemble Counterpoise will present a concert to feature Wagner’s rarely heard melodrama (Gretchen’s Lament) from the Seven Faust Pieces and an arrangement by James Francis Brown of the Siegfried Idyll. The programme also includes the melodramas The Sad Monk by Liszt and The Castle by the Sea by Strauss, and a masterly 21st-century example of the genre, On the Edge, by the award-winning creative team Edward Rushton and Dagny Gioulami.
