Sound and the Silents: a workshop

Link: Sound and the Silents: a workshop

13 Oct 09

University of Edinburgh

Registration is now open for this one-day workshop focusing on live sonic practices for silent film exhibition, which is to be held at the University of Edinburgh on Tuesday 13th October, 2009. This event is organised as part of the AHRC-funded Beyond Text Network, "The Sounds of Early Cinema in Britain".

We welcome applications from postgraduate students and interested scholars conducting research in this area and/or related disciplines. Please note that attendance is limited, and MUST be booked in advance. We urge you to book quickly to avoid disappointment.

Registration: £10 (incl. lunch and refreshments). NB The registration fee for the workshop is waived for RMA (Royal Musical Association) members - but advanced booking is still required.

Our stellar line-up features: Dr Stephen Bottomore, 'Professor' Mervyn Heard, Caoimhe Doyle and Jean McGrath (foley artist and foley recordist), plus Dr Martin Parker, Yann Seznec (aka The Amazing Rolo), and more.

Student Bursaries

Two student bursaries are available (with the generous support of the Royal Musical Association) - these cover not only the registration fee, but can also be used to contribute to travel and accommodation costs (particularly useful those travelling from further afield to attend). To apply, please state your name, university affiliation, address, email address, estimated cost of travel and whether you will need accommodation, and include a 300-word statement outlining how attending this sound effects workshop will enhance your research. Email to Dr. Annette Davison (a.c.davison@ed.ac.uk) by 5pm, Friday 11 September 2009.

For more information about the day's events and the student bursaries, please see the attached pdfs.

Associated Event

Please note also that - in association with the Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh - in the early evening of 13th October we are producing a showcase of short silent films to be accompanied by a range of the live sonic practices explored during the workshop. We are grateful to the National Film Archive and the Scottish Screen Archive for their assistance in curating this programme. Further details, tbc shortly. Booking for this showcase will be via the Cameo Cinema box office (£3/£2 conc.).
