With great sadness we communicate the news of the death of Nigel Fortune on the evening of Friday 10 April 2009. He was an Honorary member of the RMA, who had been intimately involved with the Association for a long time. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, whether personally or through his long editorship of Music & Letters.
Nigel Fortune retired in 1985 after a distinguished career as a musicologist at Birmingham University. Nigel was the secretary of the RMA from 1957-1971, and also served as a vice-president (1971-) and editor of the Research Chronicle. Nigel also served the causes of other musicological societies, including the Purcell Society and Musica Britannica.
Fotune's own research on the 17th-century vocal music of England and Italy was complemented by an editorial role with several prestigious publications, including the 1980 edition of the New Grove music dictionary, the New Oxford History of Music, and Music & Letters.
