RMA Research Chronicle Student Paper Prize 2026

Congratulations to Emma Bryden (Birmingham City University), who has been awarded this year’s RMA Research Chronicle Student Paper Prize. The prize is awarded annually in collaboration with the BFE/RMA Research Students’ Conference, held each January.

Emma’s paper, ‘Independent School Songs: Identity and Fragility’, explored the history of independent school songs and their role in reflecting and establishing institutional identities. We were impressed by the wealth of primary sources Emma uncovered for this project, and her careful critical assessment of often problematic thematic material.

Special mention also goes to our runner up, Frauke Kandler (University of Münster), for her excellent paper: ‘German Music in London during the “Third Reich”– The BBC and their Music Policy 1939 – 1945’.

Thank you to everyone who entered the competition this year. The standard of work was very high, and we look forward to seeing these papers turn into publications in the future.
