RMA/Musici Trust Prize 2026
Congratulations to Nicholas A. Walters (University of Cambridge), who has been awarded this year’s RMA/Musici Trust Prize. This prize is awarded annually for a paper on music before 1600 at the BFE/RMA Research Students’ Conference, held each January.
Nicholas’s paper, ‘‘Secundo inclinet se chorus’: Text Treatment and Liturgical Practice in the Early-Tudor Mass’, was a nuanced exploration of music-text relations in music for the mass. We were impressed by Nick’s analysis of larger syntactical and symbolic relationships between music and text, as well as his engaging framing of results that are drawn from a detailed and intimate knowledge of the repertoire.
As part of the prize, Nicholas will be presenting his work at the Annual Conference of the RMA in Belfast.
Thank you to all those who entered the competition this year; the standard of papers was very high, and we look forward to seeing all entrants develop their work in papers and in publication over the coming years.
